Mr Conor Brady

Mr. Conor Brady was educated at Cistercian College Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, and University College Dublin, where he qualified with a BA and MA as well as editing the college newspaper.
Between 1969 and 1973 Brady was a reporter with the Irish Times before leaving to become the Editor of the Garda Review and a tutor in the Department of Politics in UCD. The son of a Garda, Mr. Brady has always had a keen interest in policing, being author of “Guardians of the Peace” the first major history of the Garda Síochána.
Mr. Brady has also worked as a presenter and reporter on the RTE “News at One” and the politics and current affairs programme “This Week” between 1974 & 1975 before becoming the assistant editor of The Irish Times in 1977. This return to The Irish Times ended temporarily in 1981 when Mr. Brady was appointed as editor of The Sunday Tribune.
Mr Brady served as director and deputy editor of The Irish Times between 1984 and 1986 before becoming the paper’s editor for 16 years between 1986 and 2002. Judged to be an excellent editor, circulation of The Times grew from 80,000 to about 120,000 during his tenure.
His book ‘Up with the Times’ covers his experiences as editor during a period of extraordinary change in Ireland.
Mr. Brady has held many other roles including:
- Chairman, Board of Counsellors, European Journalism Centre (Maastricht.)
- President, World Editors Forum (Paris)
- Board Member, World Press Freedom Committee
- Board Member, Federation International des Editeurs de Journeaux
In addition, to his appointment to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission Mr. Brady is currently:
- Visiting Professor, John Jay College, City University of New York;
- Senior Teaching Fellow, Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College Dublin;
- Chairman, The British-Irish Association
- Committee Member, UNESCO International Press Freedom
